Leapfrog’s award winning Read With Me product line offers great educational/developmental benefits while giving children a little portable pal they love!

We tested this product via leaving it with families with kids of the target age (between 2-5 years). We usually know if a product is working from a kids eye perspective if the child does not want to give us the toys back – and in the case of Read With Me Violet (we tested Violet, but there is also a Read With me Scout character available), not only did the kids not want to give Violet back to us, we had to promise to send her ‘home’ as soon as we’d written our review!

Kids loved Violet, and she soon became their favourite little friend, often accompanying them in the car, to bed and pretty much anywhere else. Violet also plays musical tunes and makes funny/charming sound effects which further endears her to children.

From a parents perspective, clearly the educational impact is the goal/measurable versus having a well liked toy. And Read With me Violet didn’t disappoint here either. The product comes with 5 brightly coloured books featuring rhyming and charming stories of Violet’s adventures, with interaction between Violet and the books. Children are encouraged to pat Violet’s head when they want Violet to move onto the next page/section, which further builds their bond with Violet and usually their desire to read. Do be aware though that books often end up away from Violet/lost around the house, so you may want to keep them somewhere for safe keeping!

LeapFrog Read with Me, Violet offers substantial play value over time – because the reading level will be too difficult for kids at the lower age of the target i.e. 2 year olds, but they will still learn by following the pictures and learning to associate images with words e.g. horse, sheep etc., and over time as their reading develops they should get more and more out of the product. We would recommend parents sitting with their children at this lower end of the age bracket to ensure they get the most from the story. There are 5 books to read through, so there is a fair amount of play value/life in the product even if your child has already learnt to read.

Violet is portable, and so helped to create a calmer atmosphere on long journeys with the families we tested with.

Our favourite mode with Read With me Violet is ‘Sleepy Time’ – this should be a boon for over tired parents, as Violet will take on some of the slack of getting those little darlings finally off to sleep via relaxing stories and soothing lullabies!

WHO’S IT FOR: 2-5 year olds should enjoy playing with Read With me Violet, and should be encouraged to read – albeit 5 year olds will obviously do this to a higher level than 2 year olds, but even for the younger ages this should be a good starting point/boost to your child’s learning journey, although they are likely to need parental involvement/help at this age.

THE TOY VERDICT: All the kids who tried Read With me Violet loved it, and didn’t want to give her back! For parents, Read With Me Violet should have a positive effect on your child’s development. Highly recommended.
