Minecraft App Review

Minecraft is an immensely popular App for a reason – it features massively compelling gameplay.

If you imagined 3d virtual Lego, that’s what you get with Minecraft. It’s an open ended building game which allows kids to construct anything from basic shapes through to large scale recreations of fictional or real cityscapes.

While parents may get frustrated and concerned at how long kids will spend playing on Minecraft (given half a chance), there is a fairly solid educational/developmental benefit to this kind of play. It builds spatial awareness at the most obvious level, but perhaps more importantly let’s kids run free and wild with their imaginations. The difference between todays kids and previous generations (i.e. their parents and grandparents) is that due to fears of ‘stranger danger’ and safety consciousness, kids don’t tend to be allowed to run free and wild to the extent they used to. In fact, they tend to be shepherded from one structured environment to another. The beauty of a game like Minecraft is that it allows kids minds to run free, even if their bodies are not actually doing so. This is a really healthy thing for kids, as free running imagination is a really important developmental driver.

While Minecraft is not much too look at versus some other Apps which pay more attention to graphics, music and sound fx, it is utterly engaging. It’s very hard to stop once you start. So while it’s one of comparatively few top Apps which are paid for, you can guarantee that nearly every child will get immense play value from it.

WHO’S IT FOR: Kids from around age of 5 upwards will get the most from Minecraft, with a core age of around 6-9 overall.

THE TOY VERDICT: Minecraft is a compelling and highly engaging App game with definite positive developmental benefits for children. Highly recommended.
