Real FX Slotless Racing
Real FX Slotless Racing
Real FX Slotless Racing is a highly immersive, massively addictive RC/car racing experience.
Starting with the set up/unboxing experience, the set is remarkably (and very refreshingly) easy to set up and get racing, unlike some other more convoluted sets we’ve tried. The product comes with 2 cars, 2 controllers and 20 pieces of track of differing shapes/lengths which can be deployed in 6 different track layouts (each of which offers a different racing dynamic/lap experience.
To be upfront, the product does need quite a few batteries to get going – 6 AA & 6 AAA batteries are needed to power the two handsets and two vehicles. While this is quite a few batteries, the product did seem to offer good battery life in the time we played with them, although if you get very addicted to the product (which is possible!) you may want to look at rechargeable batteries.
The instruction booklet could be a little quicker in terms of getting things moving, but actually it’s very straightforward once you get into it – you switch your cars on & place them on the starting grid, switch on your controllers which then pair with your vehicles, select the mode and you’re ready to go, go, go!
The controller is pretty good in terms of responsiveness & sensitivity overall. To be clear though, this is not a young child’s toy…the dexterity level needed is fairly advanced i.e. older kids, teens and adults will get the most from the product. Even for them though, there is a learning experience in terms of the sensitivity of the controls and learning for each track layout how fast to go on the straight and bends to avoid coming off the track – this can have the effect of positively developing dexterity/motor skills etc.
Which brings us nicely along to one of the most unique features of this product – the track has several groundbreaking features which really contribute to making this a great experience. The track is constructed out of pieces of plastic matting type material, which are really easy to fit together. Unlike traditional slot car racing sets where once the car comes off the track you have to stop racing and frantically try to replace the vehicle (by hand) back on the track before your opponent gets too far ahead, with Real FX Slotless Racing you get a much more realistic experience i.e. you need to drive your way back onto the track. Perhaps more impressively though, via some kind of clever hidden technology, the vehicles will adhere to the track, i.e. steer round bends, themselves which sets up the kind of high octane racing you get with slot car racing where human steering is not needed. This may sound like so what, but it’s genuinely very clever and helps to deliver a truly splendid play experience. The cars will still fly off the track as with traditional slot car racing, so the skill is in applying enough accelerator to go fast down the straights and fast enough round the bends without sending the car flying off the track.
Because of this feature you do need to be careful in terms of whats around the track/where the track is placed, as part of the fun is navigating your way back onto the track before your opponent gets too far! We also find that in terms of the grim realities of most households i.e. messy kids, hair from dogs and cats etc., the product coped really well – kids will tend to step onto the track, but the pieces and the locking mechanism are sturdy without being brittle. You also don’t get the issue with the hard metal wires fluffing up/stopping working like on some slot car sets.
Another really clever feature is the ability to set one of the cars to be controlled by artificial intelligence to drive itself around the track in the manner of a pace car. Under this setting the vehicle will take the most efficient route it can to travel round without leaving the track, and while it looks like the car isn’t going that fast, inevitably it travels round at a more consistent speed, with less of the jerky movements of human hands.
The play value in Real FX Racing is considerably better than it often is with traditional slot car racing sets because the play is more continuous due to having to drive back onto the track, and the vehicles seem to be much harder wearing than slot car sets in comparable price points. One feature of the way the track is laid out and the way the vehicles move is that they do tend to smash into each other fairly frequently, which is actually a lot of fun – while shunting your opponent off the track may not be allowed in professional track racing, anything goes playing against friends and families, and this particular opportunity to push friends off the track brought a great degree of entertainment to the experience!
WHO’S IT FOR: Anyone who likes racing cars from the age of around 8 upwards. A fair degree of dexterity is needed, but it’s still fun to drive round even if you don’t quite have the control that your opponent does!
THE TOY VERDICT: WOW – Real FX Slotless Racing delivers a very entertaining and highly compelling track racing experience. It does need a lot of batteries, but nevertheless it’s highly recommended.
