VTech Kidizoom DUO Camera

VTech’s Kidizoom DUO Camera is the latest (and quite possibly the best!) in the long running, massively successful Kidizoom Camera range. We found this product to be among the best kids electronic products we’ve tested! This ‘DUO’ version of the camera features two cameras, a front facing camera as would be expected, as well as a back facing camera which we’d tend to expect as a standard feature of a smart phone in this day and age. The benefit of the back facing camera is that it allows the child to much more easily take their own picture.

In terms of the camera functionality, the spec is fine for what kids are most likely to use it for i.e. taking fairly close pictures for fun. If you have a serious photography enthusiast, you may want to look at more advanced specifications, but for fun you won’t find the Kidizoom DUO wanting! What seems to be most appealing for kids is the array of funny photo effects and features – because kids don’t always want to take cheesy pose pictures as adults tend to, they want to take funny pictures, or want to take standard pictures, and then edit them into funny pictures. According to the product description, there are over 70 fun photo effects…although we haven’t counted them we can confirm there is no shortage!

Continuing on the techie bits, the camera will roughly store 200 photos, although we do find that kids tend to record quite long videos and aren’t always that good at deleting the old ones (or think that every video is priceless!), so you may want to consider adding an additional memory card – Micro SD card – to the product if giving it as a gift. The camera has 4 x zoom, which wouldn’t satisfy a hardcore photography buff, but should be more than satisfactory for most kids. The product also features an in built microphone for sound recording with additional sound changing effects.

In terms of controlling the camera and usability the camera performs very well. There is nothing quite as exasperating for parents as a technical product which is supposed to be for kids to use on their own being so complicated/non-intuitive that adults have to invest too much time figuring things out to keep the child off their backs! That is not a problem here with the VTech Kidizoom DUO camera, it is effortlessly straightforward to use and navigate around.

The camera features 5 pretty good games for kids to play on to ensure additional play value. While we know many parents don’t want to encourage kids playing on more games when they tend to already spend too long playing on App games on tablets/phones, we feel like this limited amount of games is just enough to ensure the child will want to keep the camera around them, and is therefore likely to avoid it finding it’s way to the back of the toy cupboard after Christmas day!

One of the most nerve racking parts of testing handheld products like this are the tests we have to do to make sure the products are sturdy enough to cope with the type of rough & tumble play they will be put through! So one of the tests we do is to get the kids to drop the product from their head height to see whether it can stand up to the impact, we then drop it from adult head height just to make double sure, followed by giving it a sharp whack with some kind of blunt object as would be found around the house. The reason why this is so nerve racking is because we often allow the kids testing the products to keep them…so they are really worried when we risk damaging what they say as ‘theirs’! In this case with the VTech Kidizoom DUO they needn’t have worried! The drop from kids head height made no impression, and dropping from adult head height did in fairness make the ‘door’ to the batteries come off, but this was easily replaced with no damage to the camera itself – PASS!

WHO’S IT FOR: The VTech Kidizoom DUO camera offers a fun play experience for kids from around 3-4 years of age up to around 8 or 9 years of age. The product comes in a pink version and a blue version, the product is otherwise the same, so you can pick and choose as you like!

THE TOY VERDICT: We absolutely love this product. Kids loved it, and it offers enough ongoing play value to be a worthwhile purchase. Highly recommended.
