This Toy Crossbow product comes from the Petron Sureshot range.

Clearly there is a great deal of fun to be had with ‘blaster’ toys when they work well, and in this case we have to report that this product definitely delivers!

Of all the many (thousands) of toy testing groups we have conducted, testing this product range was one of the most enjoyable. There is a simple but highly motivating pleasure in playing with this product. In fact so motivating was this product to use that we literally had to make children give them back at the end, which is surprisingly rare…surprisingly often kids get bored of what we’re testing before we get through all our testing questions/criteria, but not in this case. This suggests substantial re-play value which can only be a good thing.

The Petron Sureshot Crossbow uses sucker darts. Unlike the soft darts other systems use, which bounce off, the sucker darts stick to most hard surfaces we tested with inc. brick, stone, concrete & glass. We also allowed ourselves to be used as living targets (!) for kids to shoot at so we could see what would happen if children fired them at each other (which is obviously quite common in reality!). While we wouldn’t recommend firing them at eye level, and would suggest parents control the play patterns/ensure safe play in general, we can say that the sucker darts didn’t hurt or cause any damage to us when we were hit by them!

The selling point that the Petron Sureshot brand uses is ‘high accuracy’…so as ever we set out to test whether this was truly the case. The testing showed that this toy crossbow is highly accurate – even somewhat younger children i.e. 6-7 years of age achieved surprising accuracy when firing at targets.

We also found that the mechanism for loading and firing the gun was fairly straightforward, and although there is some very basic assembly i.e. 2 pieces that have to be fitted together, and it can take the kids a few times to ‘get’ how loading/firing works, we found that this toy was easier for kids to load & fire versus numerous other products in this category. The child needs to apply very little force, and in the end the sucker dart is fired out at an impressive speed. In fact that was one of the main responses when we asked kids why they liked this so much – “the dart comes out really fast!”

WHO’S IT FOR

The packaging suggests 6+ as the appropriate age, and we broadly agree with this. Younger children may not be able to work the product, and would perhaps be more likely to fire at inappropriate objects/living things! In terms of upper age target, we had both men and women playing, with the oldest tester being in his early 50’s. This could well be both suitable/attractive to kids, and suitable/appealing as novelty gift for ‘Kidults’ i.e. a light hearted fun gift for adults.

THE TOY VERDICT

We genuinely loved this product. While some parents may have concerns about products encouraging kids to use toy weapons, for others who don’t have this objection, the Petron Sureshot Crossbow is as good as we’ve tested in this category in terms of our key measures. We highly recommend this product.
